3 Aspect of prayer by Fred Smith

I must admit that I really don’t understand prayer. I pray because He tells me to and I know it works. As I think about what prayer is it is clear that it is relational, positional and directional. Let me give you a few thoughts to consider.

1. Prayer is Relational

We talk about having a personal relationship with Christ. I wrote various friends about this concept and received a wonderful response from Ray Stedman, a friend that I respect so much. He answered that to him it meant that " Christ was a personality who was knowable and who had the personality qualities of love and care and understanding."

Our relationship is best expressed with a spirit of gratitude, not request. Gratitude is our best antidote for anxiety. When Art Demoss was losing so much money I would call him and ask how he was doing. He would always say, "Better than I deserve." Truth is, most of us are doing better than we deserve but just not better than we wish for. In prayer we demonstrate the nature of this relationship and acknowledge it through gratitude. Prayer is conversation born of relationship.

2. Prayer is Positional

In a sense, prayer is when I get into harmony with God like the orchestra tuning before they begin to play. They decide what A 440 really is. In a more theological way, we reach the place Christ did when he said, "not my will but thine be done." This is the proper position and as far as I know it is best attained in prayer. I have the opportunity to pray because of my position in Christ, but I understand the serious nature of this position in prayer, as well. Access speaks of worship to me.

Often there is a great deal of struggle till we get to that point of relaxed comfort. Robbie is a plumber up in Colorado who does a great deal of work down in very tight places in basements and underground buildings. When I asked him if he ever becomes affected with claustrophobia he answered , "No, not really, but when I’m squeezing through a real tight place I’ve had to learn to relax or I get stiff and my body seems to swell up so I just lay there until I can get relaxed and then I can wiggle out." Oftentimes I have felt myself becoming inflexible and even feeling like I’m swelling up, badly needing to relax and become flexible again. This is the positional quality of prayer: "thy will be done."

3. Prayer is directional

Father Cavanaugh , former President of Notre Dame, used to say to other leaders, "be right. " When we really want to be right, then prayer is a great way to find the direction.. Steve Brown tells how a layman came and asked him to pray about whether or not he should give up his mistress, to which Steve said, "Get lost. You and I both know that’s wrong and there’s no point in praying about it." There isn’t any point in praying that wrong become right. It’s only when we want truly to know the will of God that we can ask for the direction as we receive it through "the witness of the spirit." This may be mystical for some of you but don’t think of it as anything other than scriptural. The spirit sounds for us that ring of truth. Just as there is true North, there is true direction that we can through prayer.

Prayer changes me. It affirms my relationship to Christ, it helps me assume the position of wanting His will and it clearly sets the direction.

Cont. Prayer and Faith

continuation of prayer and faith:

We talk about those people Jesus said according to your faith it shall be done.

Prayer and Faith requires also Patience. There are prayers that we need to wait till

We get an answer. David is familiar with this kind of patience.

Psalm 40:1 I waited for the Lord; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

We never knew exactly how long David waited for his prayers to be answered, but he said that he waited upon the Lord.

Psalm 13: How long wilt Thou forget me, O Lord? Forever? How long Thou hide Thy face from me?

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O Lord my God. Lighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

David the powerful man who killed Goliath was in deep trouble. See in this verse that David started asking questions of how long? He even come to a point of telling God, Lighten his eyes lest he sleep the sleep of death. This is how many people feel when it seems there is no hope and God does not hear their prayers. Some times we just want to sleep with our problems and hope not to wake up. Some times we pray to God in a manner of shouting with the shout of frustrations and some times people who hear us asking God this way they tell you to have some respect to God, and tells you that no wonder why God does not answer your prayer, you show no respect to God at all. I believed it is okay to be true to God. We can never hide from God any way. He knows our heart. Be like David who cried out his frustration. How long O Lord will I wait? I believe that man who talks to God this way will not express this question of How long, with the sound of a sweet smile. Many of us have this kind of feeling within ourselves, having sorrow in our heart daily, just like David. This sorrow makes us weary and tired of waiting, As if God does not care and left you all alone. Though you may feel and may be in this kind of situation, never give up hope. See in verse 5- But I have trust in Thy mercy, my heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation. Verse 6- I will sing unto the Lord, because He hath dealt bountifully with me.

I am blessed to share this with you. I have dealt this kind of situation in my life before. Whenever I become frustrated and tell God what exactly is in my heart, one of the sisters who heard me saying all those things rebuke me and told me that it was disrespectful toward God. If all Christians will let their fellow Christians say what they want to say to God, I believed that their heart will be emptied and that our heart will have a place for God’s renewal, that we will be able to praise God and trust Him even more. I suggest to you that you read this scripture as much as you can, till you understand what it meant.

Just a couple of months ago, I was so stressed out because of waiting for God’s answer to my prayers and it feels like it is taking forever. Now I was telling God with the loud voice and my husband let me tell God all those things, afterwards, I felt good and renewed by God’s mercy.

Psalm 18: 4-5 The sorrow of death compassed me, and the flood of ungodly men made me afraid.

The sorrow of hell compassed me about: the snare of death preserved me.

David who killed Goliath, the brave man of God confess to God that men made him afraid. Are we confessing to God our fear? Remember that God alone is our comforter, for He alone is our comfort.

If we will not say to God the truth about what we have in our hearts, renewal will not take place in our lives. Don’t be afraid of what your neighbors will say about you. Forget about what they will think of you being a disrespectful Christian. God is a Big God, he can handle you and your frustrations. Just tell Him the truth of what you have in your heart. If you are fearful, tell Him that you are afraid of whatever it is that makes you fearful. Stop pretending that you are strong and your faith in God is perfect.

Let Him hear you say that you truly need Him. Be like David, telling God that men made him fearful.

After david told God his fears , David still believed in God’s mercy and salvation. Telling God our bitterness, will not take away our faith in God . Telling God our dissapointments and fear, God will not look at it as doubt. He look and see it that we need Him badly.

David was able to make a song : the Lord is my rock and my salvation, during those moments, David was not delivered from his enemies yet physically, but David was delivered from his fear. David’s heart being focused on God’s mercy. David was renewed after he emptied his heart to God.

Whatever it is that stresses you, whatever it is that you fear ; tell God all about it. He is a Big God He can handle it. Let Him hear from your mouth that you are weak and you need Him badly.

David never lost his faith in God inspite of his fear in men, and sorrow in his heart.

Let us stop taking God as a sensitive God, He is a Big MAN, He is able to take our cross upon Himself, He is also able to take your fear and frustration.

Matthew 11: 28-29 Come to me those who are tired and weary and I will give you rest.

Psalm 51:6 Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward parts:and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. God is after the truth no matter what it is that is hidden in our heart.

Verse 17- The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart, o God Thou wilt not despise.

Being true to God, taking the mask off is always better. The bible tell us that God search the heart.

In this verse Psalm 51:6 God is after the truth which are hidden in our hearts.

God does not desire for burn offering and sacrifices we bring, but He is desiring for all of us to be true to Him. To be humble and to have a teachable Spirit.

How true are we before God? Are we like David able to confess everything before God. Or are we more focus and concern of what other Christians will think and say about you?

Psalm 55: David is telling God everything that is in his heart and in his mind. He thought of running away from all those terror and horror that is overwhelming him, see in verse 6-7: but what will happen if he ran away and try to hide from those people he fear, he will wander far off in the wildernes.

I do believed that David was confessing all this to God because He trust God that He alone can help him and give him the victory.

This mindset of being true to God is also important in prayer and faith. Take note that David never lost his faith and trust in God, though he was confessing his weakness in that very moment. The weaknesses of fear and sorrow. See to it also that no matter how sorrowful and fearful David was, he waited till God heard him. He never gave up , He continued his prayer to God, though it felt like God turned His face from David. I urge all of you to do the same thing. Never lose your faith in God and never give up till you get God’s answer.

Now there are people who say; they don’t even pray any more because they were a shamed of what they have done. Sinned against God. David sinned also against God and sin did not stop David to ask God for help. David never stop asking God for cleansing. David never gave up his faith and trust in God that God is the God of mercy and He is the savior. Never give up!

I remember the blind man, he heard Jesus of Nazareth was passing by; He shouted,” Lord Son of David, have mercy on me; the others told him to be quiet; the blind man shouted till Jesus turned to him and asked him what can He do for him? Then the man said; I want to see again. Jesus asked him; do you believed that I am able to do this? He said yes! Jesus touch his eyes and said,” according to your faith it shall be done“.

Now the blind man was healed, lesson: he did not give up. Though the disciples of Jesus told him to be quiet, he continued to call upon Jesus to show him mercy.

Then the cripple man waiting for the angel to strike the pool, and whoever come first to wash on that pool will be healed. Now this man waited and waited, and all his life other people are getting healed, but not him. Now the good thing is Jesus Christ is the moving pool. In fact Jesus is the spring of water.

He come to us so we can all be washed and be healed. This man waited all his life, did God ignore his need of healing? No! God knows that this crippled man needed His touch that God sent Jesus right there where he’s at to heal him.

The bible tells us about many miracles that happen because of not giving up prayer and faith in the Lord.

Prayer & Faith

Today, I would like to share about what’s in my heart. We will still continue about the encouragement next time.

                                                                      Prayer & Faith

Let us talk about prayer and faith today! In this lesson we will discover the importance of prayer and faith.

Faith in Greek word is Pistis/ Pis- tis means persuasion, conviction, the truthfulness of God, the truth itself, Assurance, fidelity, believe, belief.

Prayer in the other hand is actually faith claiming. Taking hold of God’s power .

Faith is the foundation of every believer in this world. It is the essential quality in the heart of every man who desire to communicate with our God.

In the book of Gospel, Jesus our Lord mentioned about faith, in fact He mention faith so many times.

Pistis / Faith = assurance that we have what we ask for in prayer. According to Mark 11: 24 Therefore I say unto you, what things so ever ye desire, when ye pray, believed that ye received them, and ye shall have them.

Jesus have shown Simon Peter and to His disciples of how important to have faith.

Luke 22: 31-32 Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desire to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I prayed for thee, that thy FAITH fail not: and when thou art converted strengthen thy brethren.

The devil desired Peter, but the Lord had more of Peter’s faith guarded.

Jesus Christ have shown everyone of us of how important it is to have the FAITH.

There are so many people Jesus healed; One of them is the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years.

After the woman touch the garment of Jesus, she was healed. Then Jesus turn to her and say; woman your FAITH has healed you. { Matthew 9:22} Two blind man come after Jesus shouting, Lord Son of David, have mercy on us. Jesus ask them the question : Believe ye that I am able to do this? Then two blind man said Yes Lord! Jesus touch their eyes and said: According to your FAITH be it unto you { Mt. 9: 27-29}.

The sinful woman ran to Jesus and wash Jesus feet with her tears and wipe it with her hair. Then Anointed Jesus with ointment. Luke 7: 48 -50 Thy sins are forgiven / Thy FAITH hath saved thee; go in

Peace.

Jesus asked a question that I think we need to answer it within ourselves. The question is found in Luke 18:8… When the Son of man cometh, shall He find FAITH on the earth? { when Jesus come into our life, can He find FAITH in you and in me?}.

Do we have faith in God? Do we believe in Christ Jesus? Do we believe in His word which is everlasting?

Jesus alone can judge how big and how small our FAITH is. There is no one else who can judge our FAITH but Him. The disciples of Jesus was casting the demon out of a boy, which they were not able to do. The father of the boy came to Jesus and told Jesus of how His disciples tried to cast the demon out, but the demon was stubborn that they could not cast it out. So Jesus healed the boy instead. Now the disciples asked Jesus why they couldn’t cast the demon out. Jesus said because you have small FAITH.

Jesus walked on water, Peter ask Jesus to let him walk on water too, as soon as Peter doubted he started to drown, Jesus stretch forth His hand and caught him, and said to Peter O thou of little FAITH, wherefore didst thou doubt? { see in Matthew 14: 22-31}

The woman who’s child was suffering from demon possession, begged Jesus to help her daughter. Jesus told the gentile woman: It is not right to take the children’s bread and give it to dogs.

Verse 27 – the woman said; True Lord; yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their Masters’ table. Then Jesus said; O woman great is thou FAITH. Be it unto thee even as thou wilt.

Talking about Encouragement

Quote

Encouragement

I know how to be discourage and I know how to be encourage. we are all familiar with those words. Through all my life I’m mostly discouraged specially by people I love.
Doctors and Lawyers, including Pastors can discourage you by giving you hopeless words. Situations we may face might be discouraging, but one thing I know, hope does not disappoint anyone for God have poured out His love upon by giving us His Holy Spirit {see in Romans 5:5} Whenever people around us discourages us, I have learned to encourage myself by believing the word of God has been promised to us even the time begun. Resently my husband received a letter that can discourage both of us.
After reading the letter, battle started within my heart and mind. I thought to myself, I will not let anyone discourage me and I will not believed in a word those people say, because I know God has promised Jeff and I that He will fulfill whatever He has promised and those promises has been confirm by people we never met before.
God spoke to us in a dream and in  visions and thorugh people. Jeff and I were encouraged to remeber the word written in the Bible. How Joshua experience the Glory of the Lord. He commanded the moon and the sun to stand still and we are both blessed to remember and have a great understanding and faith in the Lord that there is "NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVED IN HIM".
The Promised of the Lord has been made yes and amen through Christ Jesus our Lord. There is nothing we can do about it except to believe.
Whenever negative report comes to me or to my husband Jeff, we both learned and continue learning to listen and believed in what God has spoken that He is faithful to bring it into fulfillment in our lives.
I remember Jeff and my friend Nely and I were having a friday night prayer known as {Harp & bowl} freestyle worship. The Lord have given us the promisedof whatever we wish that night He will grant us. My friend Nely ask for her husband to come over to Holland. The Lord said to her consider it is done. The following week she arrange the documents of her husband to come over . For three times the husband’s request for visa was rejected. My friend called me after a few months, disappointed and was really down. She told me that her husband just called her and told her he did not get the visa. She start telling me about what happen that friday night prayer may be not from God. I told her I don’t anything about that doubt the only thing I know is the Lord said "Consider it is done that is what I believed so it is done my friend". After that day we spoke, the next day she called me again and said, after I call you, my husband called me that night and told her that the Netherland Embassy called him to get his visa. The same man that rejected his request for visa called that day and told Nely’s husband that he got his visa.
That is our GOD. Always remember this people {readers} God has promised us salvation, and God fulfilled that promised while we were sinners and unbelivers of God. God fulfill His promises according to His own faithfulness and not according to our faithfulness.  There are so much more promises God has made and we will continue to see that later on. {To be continued}…

Encouragement Part 2

Encouragement: Part 2

Where are you Lord ? The question we ask God when we are in hard situations. It is easy to feel all alone when things are tough.

We are all familiar of the story of Moses and How God delivered Israel from their oppressor . When God revealed Himself to Moses through the burning bush, God said to Moses

Indeed I have heard the cry of my people and have seen their misery”.

Remember that we have the God who is the same yesterday, today and forever more. The God who can hear before is the God who hears you today. The God who can see your sufferings is able to help you out of whatever situation you are in.

I can share you another experience we have encountered. We were walking in Amsterdam City when the Lord spoke to me and told me to talk to the guy that was sitting in the corner of the busy road. We approached the guy, shook his hand and I ask him how he is? He honestly said, he’s not doing so well. I told him that we actually did not notice you until the Lord spoke to me and told me to talk to you. I ask him if he believed in God? He started to share his experience. This is what he told us:

From his tender age he started using drugs, and he’s been cast out from his family. He does not have any contact with his family more than seven years long. All he knew is that they moved to Spain and he does not know where . Just this morning he was shouting to God and throwing broken bottles and cursed God. He told God that I know you exist but that was before that is why we have air and trees, but not anymore. You might be dead? If you exist, then send me some body who will talk to me about you God. Send someone today. Then after a while I came here in the city still thinking.

I told him about the existence of our God and His grace found in Christ Jesus our Lord. He accepted Jesus Christ to be his Lord from that day on. Then he told us that he want to have a new life. He want to go home with his family but he does not know how and can his family accept him again after all what he has done. Can his family forgive him?

Jeff took his hand said we can pray to God about that. He agreed and we prayed. We ask for an open door for this family to be united and to have a heart full of love that is able to accept him as the Lord accepts everyone of us. He was emotional. Then Jeff told him to expect miracles from the Lord. He smiled and hug Jeff and me and our friend who was with us. Then he said that he believed God can do the miracle. He told us also about the money he owed from the bank and it was quiet a lot. Then we told him that the Lord will take care of that.

Jeff ask if there’s any way we can contact with him. He gave the phone number of his friend. Two weeks later, Jeff called him, we bought a Spanish Bible for him, he was so happy that very moment. He said that he’s just been praying to God to let Jeff call him now because he is already in the train station going home to his family. We are all excited. He told us the miracle happened after we met and prayed together in the middle of the busy street in Amsterdam. This is his miracle:

He said. “The day we were praying is the time his sister from Spain felt something that she really need to come to Holland and look for her him“. She just felt that she can find him in Amsterdam. Which she did.

He told us also that her sister paid all the money he owed from the Bank and even agreement that she will help him get better. She said that their parents are also waiting for him at home.

Then He said to Jeff that I promise that I will never forget this miracle God did in my life and that in Spain I will even go to the church and when I am better I will also serve God. Through the phone Jeff prayed for him and blessed him. By the way the name of this guy is Carlo.

Miracles is not only from old times and for this man Carlo, but for everyone of us. No matter what situation you are in right now, God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly and beyond what we can think or imagine.

We have the God who is the SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER MORE. Do not lose hope. After you read this and you still don’t believe in God’s power, one thing I can tell you:

God blesses everyone by His own faithfulness, love and grace and not by our own faithfulness. You may not believed in miracles but He is still the God of miracles.

God bless you even more! { to be continued}…
