True Fasting

Prayer and fasting

Food, drinks are the things come to our mind once we hear the word prayer and fasting. Most of the time I hear from people they are fasting because they want some thing from God. It is funny because I use to do this. One time my former Pastor ask me why am I fasting that day? I said for no reason. She said you must have a reason. Well I want to be close to God I said. Oh is good she said. For how long will you do your fasting? I said that is funny question. I come to realize that very moment, I want to be close to God every single day, every second of my life, but how long will I do the fasting. So I answer my Pastor only for a couple of days. Any way, the reason she knew my fasting is because she us for lunch. Since that day, I become hungry to know about fasting. What is the true fasting and do we need a reason for it.

I believed that God blesses us not because we fast or even pray for it. I believed that God blesses us because that is God’s nature, blessing His Creation.

Try to understand that we did not ask God to send us Redeemer, but He did. We did not ask Jesus to die for us, but He did. We did not ask God to show His mercy in the first place yet He did. We did not ask God to form us in our mother’s womb and yet He did. That is the nature of our Creator.

My sister many time called me and ask me to pray and fast for her, reason because she is in big problem or she is sick. Will I hope that many who will read this will learn as I have learn from our Lord.

What is prayer and fasting God truly chose?

I would like to share with you the story of a brother in Christ. He was hook in smoking one pack a day.

Even during Sunday services, he will go out side just to smoke. After smoking he will wait a bit outside till the smell is gone so others might not smell him. One Sunday the Preacher’s message was about prayer and fasting. Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. As he was outside smoking, he ask God the question; why God? My wife been praying and fasting for me to stop smoking, I did pray and ask you to help me stop this, yet here I am still smoking. Why don’t you hear our prayer?

As he was waiting to be refresh, a tiny voice spoke to him saying; I want you to fast starting today.

You can eat and drink any time you want and anything you want except no alcohol. He said what kind of fasting is that? Starting today don’t light up any cigarette you have. He start fasting, first day then jump to his second days then 3rd till he come to three years not smoking at all. He was holding the half pack of cigarette on his hand when he was saying this; this was my leftover cigarette since the day I started fasting. Then he shouted hallelujah.

God chosen kind of fasting

Isaiah 58

1Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

2Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

3Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

4Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

5Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

6Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

7Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

8Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy reward.

9Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

10And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:

11And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

12And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

13If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

14Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
